Official Statement from Disney/Lucasfilm Regarding the future of the Expanded Universe
Just minutes ago on the official Star Wars website, it was announced that “In order to give maximum creative freedom to the filmmakers and also preserve an element of surprise and discovery for the audience, Star Wars Episodes VII-IX will not tell the same story told in the post-Return of the Jedi Expanded Universe. While the universe that readers knew is changing, it is not being discarded.” What that means is while we may still see elements that originated in the EU appear in the upcoming films or the animated Star Wars Rebels television series, we will not see any of the exact story arcs that we have read and enjoyed over the past 35 years.
The announcement also made sure to announce that the EU will not be going away. The novels from authors including Timothy Zahn, Kevin J. Anderson and Brian Daley will be kept in production for people to continue enjoying for years to come. These existing novels will be presented under the newly created “LEGENDS” banner.
