Minor League Baseball Team Honors Lando Calrissian
Via the Washington Post:
Just about every pro baseball team has held a Star Wars Day by now. So if you want to make your Star Days Day stand out, you have to do something different. Like turn your uniforms into an homage to Lando Calrissian and Cloud City.
“This is the first time, I think, that Billy Dee Williams’s face has been on a jersey, so we’ve got that going for us,” Potomac Nationals spokesman Bryan Holland said. “We like to stand out. It’s going to be a nice complement to Star Wars Day. And the Cloud City aspect of it just makes it all the more cheeky.”
Now that they’ve got the jerseys ready — the event is June 14 — the team is thinking of other ways to pay homage to Lando during the game. There will almost certainly be Billy Dee Williams clips on the scoreboard, and staffers are contemplating exactly what role Lando played in the Star Wars universe, and how best to reflect that. (Screenwriter Lawrence Kasdan recently told Vanity Fair that Calrissian will likely be back before the franchise concludes.)
“It’s going to be pretty entertaining to see top prospects in Lando jerseys,” Holland said. “And when you see Billy Dee staring at you, if you’re the opposing pitcher, I don’t know how you don’t laugh. It’s definitely a spin off of just having Darth Vader and the Storm Troopers at the game. The jersey element is really what’s going to separate us.”
