Episode VIII Prepping to Shoot in Croatia
The Star Wars: Episode VIII crew is preparing to transport a Croatian street to a galaxy far, far away.
Over the course of the seven existing films, Lucasfilm has transformed many Earthly locations into various spots that populate the Star Wars galaxy. Most famously, Tunisia has been the stand in for the desert planet of Tatooine on multiple occasions. Now a new country is set to join those ranks as mysterious doorways have been constructed on a street in Dubrovnik, Croatia. You can see what the street looks like normally in the last picture of the gallery above.
Rumors have circulated for a few months that Dubrovnik was going to be used for location filming in Star Wars Episode: VIII, but Lucasfilm has remained silent on the matter. This week, however, The Dubrovnik Times spotted some odd doorways being constructed in front of a souveniour shop. In addition to the doorways, a pillar facade was being added to the building. The following day an Instagram user named jimmerkelthethird spotted that some sort of panels had been added to the doorways that had a distinctly otherworldly feel to them.
This location has still not been officially confirmed, but it looks fairly obvious that this is preparation for the arrival of the Star Wars: Episode VIII crew. As this is the first time the saga has filmed in Croatia it is impossible to guess what planet this is a stand in for. It has a bit of a Naboo feel to it, but those shoots happened mainly in Spain, and the oval doorways aren’t consistent with the design language of that planet. If I was to hazard a guess, this will be an entirely new planet being added to the saga, but it’s anyone’s guess how large of a role it will play in the narrative.
