The Force Awakens Wins Big at the 2016 Empire Awards
The people have spoken! Empire readers have voted in their thousands, and this evening the Jameson Empire Awards – the antidote to mainstream film awards – rolled into town, with Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Mad Max: Fury Road emerging as the big winners.
In a glitzy London ceremony, hosted by comedian and actor David Walliams, the latest instalment in the Star Wars saga was named Best Sci-Fi/Fantasy film, and its two breakout stars, Daisy Ridley and John Boyega, were named Best Female Newcomer and Best Male Newcomer respectively. Both were in attendance to accept their awards; Ridley said in her acceptance speech it was “an amazing time to be a woman in film”.
Director J.J. Abrams also won Best Director, and The Force Awakens was ultimately the biggest winner of the night, taking five gongs back to a galaxy far, far away. Mad Max: Fury Road was close behind with four, and Sam Mendes’ latest James Bond adventure Spectre, won two (Best British Film and Best Thriller).
