Netflix losing ‘Star Wars,’ Marvel movies to Disney’s streaming service
The Walt Disney Co. is pulling its “Star Wars” and Marvel superhero franchises from Netflix as it preps its own streaming service.
Disney had announced last month that it would launch a Disney-branded streaming service with Disney and Pixar titles. It was unclear how that would impact the Disney-owned Lucasfilm and Marvel studios.
Disney CEO Bob Iger told Variety that “we’ve now decided we will put the Marvel and ‘Star Wars’ movies on this app as well.”
More than half of the Top 25 highest grossing movies are Disney, Pixar, Marvel or “Star Wars” titles, according to Box Office Mojo.
The new streaming service is expected to launch in 2019.
According to a report in the Business Insider, Disney will need to attract at least 32 million just to break even on its new service.
Netflix has nearly 104 million subscribers worldwide.
